What To Expect

Your First Visit

At Elwood Family Dentist, we are strong believers that there is more to teeth than meets the eye. We view the mouth as a gateway to other potential problems within the body that many are unaware could be of any connection.

With us, a check-up is not merely checking your teeth for calculus and decay. We carefully inspect the entire mouth, to ensure that any issues that might otherwise be overlooked, are noticed as quickly as possible.

Your First Visit at Elwood Family Dentist

Your First Check-Up

Horizontal line 2

The first time you come and see us, we perform an extensive check of the entire mouth. This includes:

Checking the teeth for any signs of decay or defects

Examining the gums for any signs of gingivitis and recession

Recording the gum pocket depths of each tooth to check for Periodontitis

Examining the cheeks, lips, and tongue for pathology

Locating areas of calculus for removal

Examining the bite

Examining the Jaw and Teeth for any signs of wear or grinding

If the Dentist determines that you require a clean, then we are happy to also perform this at the time of you check-up. We believe that prevention is better than cure, as a result following a professional clean we will perform a Fluoride treatment to strengthen the teeth and protect against decay. The best time to do this is following a clean when the teeth are pristinely clean.

We recommend that ‘Bite-wing’ x-rays are taken every 2 years to check for decay or defects between the teeth, determine the bone levels surrounding teeth, and to locate any potential pathologies. For those who do not have Dental insurance, or a lower level of rebate, we will provide you with a referral which will enable you to receive your dental x-rays on Medicare with “Bulk Billing’, we will then happily check these x-rays for you free of charge and provide any necessary advice.

If any treatment is recommended, we will provide you with a detailed treatment plan including the estimated costs and relevant ADA procedures codes. This will enable you to gain a rebate estimate from your insurer prior the treatment commencing. We are happy to answer any questions you have regarding proposed treatment both during and after your check-up, most of the time you will not require an additional appointment for this and you can simply give us a call and we are happy to answer any queries you may have.

We believe that education is essential to optimal oral health; we encourage you to ask any questions, no matter how silly you believe they are! We are happy to provide advice on a range of topics including oral hygiene, diet, and procedure processes.

We hope to embark on a trusting, life-long relationship with our patients; we look forward to meeting you!
