A dental check-up (aka dental hygiene) involves a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, jaws and surrounding muscles, will prevent minor dental problems from becoming major and costly ones. At Elwood Family Dentist, we recommend six monthly check ups with our dentist. When routine check ups are supported by a good home dental routine, your oral health will remain strong and healthy for many years to come.
Your first dental check up with us always starts with a good conversation regarding your health, both oral and general. Your dentist will ask you about any dental difficulties since your last dental experience. Your dentist needs to be aware of your medical conditions and medications as it may impact the way that they treat and diagnose issues with your teeth. It’s also a good time to discuss any dental phobias – for some patients, fear of the dentist starts in early childhood. Your dentist will take this on board – in fact, just talking about these can actually help relieve them and build trust. As you settle into the dental chair, a scaling and polishing takes place.
Depending on your dental exam results, past dental history and level of risks for developing cavities, dental X-rays may be required. An X-ray can give the dentist a good view of your jaw alignment, any decay between teeth as well as identifying any impacted teeth, hidden abscesses, or cysts on the roots of your teeth.
Following the identification of issues, we work with you to make well-informed decisions about your dental health. If complex treatment is required, a comprehensive written treatment plan and complete estimate of fees will be provided. Some cases might call for a specialist, and we will organise referrals as needed. Call us for a dental checkup so you can be in charge of your own dental health!
We emphasize prevention dentistry and thus recommend checkup and clean every 6 months. The timing of your dental check-ups depends on your oral health. If you’re at a high risk for future problems, your dentist may have you come in more often until your oral health is under control.
