Preventive Dentistry

Preventive dentistry is the area of dentistry that focuses on those procedures and life practices that help people to prevent the beginning or progression of oral disease. It includes at-home dental care performed by patients, as well as dental care and education by professional dental staff in the clinic.

At Elwood Family Dentist this is the area of Dentistry we are most passionate about. Prevention is better than any cure, and we aim to teach you the techniques, and provide preventative treatments in order to prevent any issues from developing. Preventing problems is the best way of protecting your teeth.

Your preventative appointment will include a thorough clean with one of our friendly Dentists. Your gums will be checked for signs of gingivitis and gum disease, focusing on plaque, calculus (hardened plaque) and staining, and screened for other diseases such as oral cancer.

Your regular 6 to 12 monthly visits will also consist of a dental exam, which includes a complete check of your teeth, restorations and soft tissues, with an aim of identifying any potential issues or concerns before they evolve and develop.

X-Rays may be required at this visit, and will be discussed with you beforehand, they are generally recommended every two years to ensure a thorough examination, checking in between the teeth, below the gum lines, and below any restorations you may have.
