Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue. Unfortunately, gum health is all too often over looked. Without healthy gums, there is the potential for more serious conditions like Periodontal Disease to develop, and potentially cause the premature loss of teeth.
More commonly known as ‘gum disease’, gingivitis is caused by the presence of plaque and calculus. The rough surface of calculus allows plaque to thrive and remain in the oral environment despite thorough brushing. Plaque contains bacteria that accumulate and multiply, these bacteria can start the decay process in as little as 72 hours, so its removal is imperative.
The typical symptoms of Gingivitis include redness of gums, swollen gums, painful gums, and bleeding when gums are touched, brushed or flossed. As soon as you notice any of these symptoms its time to hear to a Dental Professional, Gingivitis should not be ignored.
Removing plaque is critical in minimising and controlling gum disease. When left undisturbed, plaque hardens leading to Calculus. Calculus is similar to a stone, and can only be removed by a Dental Professional. Gingival issues have also been linked to low birth weight, premature births and heart issues, so it is imperative that optimal oral health is reached to ensure the health of the entire body.
At Elwood Family Dentist, we understand that prevention and education are key. A dental cleaning is recommended every 6 months. Unfortunately none of us are immune to plaque and Bacteria, but as the rate at which calculus and gingivitis occurs varies between individuals, a dental professional will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for annual cleans instead.
